Happy New Year everyone!
As many of you may know by now, data protection, user privacy, and bringing awareness to cyber crimes are some of the main reasons I am expressing my thoughts. On today's topic of ToBeSecured, I will be discussing the dangers of wireless communications and some ways you can be aware of malicious acts, while also preventing them. Also, I want to get your minds wrapped around the new fifth-generation cellular networks, better known as 5G. But before we lock in on this conversation I just want to point out the video if you haven't clicked it already. To make things a little more interesting, I decided to install this 2:30 video into my post for today because we all go to airports, visit libraries, and coffee shops. We also love the word free even when we know there's a cost that comes with it. How does the 3 correlate? What is something that we know we can get when we arrive to those places? "Free Wi-Fi".
What is Wireless communications and how does it correlate to Wi-Fi? Well, you came to the right place and I will school you a little bit. Wireless communications is a type of data that is performed and delivered wirelessly. The term incorporates all procedures and forms of connecting and communicating between two or more devices using a wireless signal through wireless communication technologies and devices. When YOU connect to Wi-Fi in public places on your cell phone, PC, tablet, etc., the network is not private so therefore YOU are not the only one using that Wi-Fi. A malicious person could be sitting right across from or next to you. It's a smart tactic to be aware at all times and ensure your privacy is protected. ToBeSecured, do the both of us a favor and do not connect to open networks. This gives hackers an open door policy to your personal information, even if it's a small file that contains all of your passwords to email accounts, social media accounts, bank accounts, etc. If you are near a Starbucks (or wherever your chill spot is) and it's urgent that you connect to a network, make sure you use a virtual private network (VPN). A virtual private network will provide secure and encrypted connections to allocate greater privacy and security, locking out those malicious hackers from accessing OUR information. It allows you to access the internet through a remote server, hiding your actual location and browser history, and encrypting your data. The fact is the internet was created for easy information exchange, not user privacy, anonymization, or encrypted communication. Most VPN's are far from free, at least the ones that will ensure total protection, but some companies offer free trials and service fees begin at $6.99. I strongly encourage you to read the terms and conditions before signing up. If their documentation is hard to interpret, try another company until the terms of service are clear and concise rather nontransparent.
Before you go, did you know most cell phone companies like AT&T, Sprint, and Verizon are incorporating the new 5G network this year or beginning 2020? Yep, this year a big technology shift is happening. This new era is guaranteeing faster smartphones, internet speeds that allow YOU to download within seconds, and the spread of artificial intelligence. When will it be here? Although smartphones aren't ready for a direct connection to a 5G network, companies such as AT&T and Verizon are already ahead of the game. The two have already begun to market and sell devices that provide wireless connections to nearby phones and computers, but in limited parts of the US. What are your thoughts? Will you purchase new phones and other smart devices in the near future that allow you to directly access the new 5G network? What do you think some of the new complications will be? Fill me in !
