Major Data Breach affecting Louisiana’s Office of Motor Vehicles (OMV)

Welcome back to my blog where you can find the latest news relating to privacy and security right here! I’m excited to provide you with updated information on topics you may have missed or aren’t aware of. This one is for all individuals who applied for and/or were issued a Louisiana driver’s license, identification card, and/or vehicle registration.

The news was released back in June that a 3rd party data transfer service, MOVEit, was targeted by cyber hackers exposing sensitive data affecting all Louisianans. It was advised to all Louisianans to immediately take steps to safeguard their identity with the belief that anyone with a state-issued driver’s license, ID, or car registration to have been exposed by this incident. The data hackers may have stolen is name, address, SSN, birthdate, height, eye color, driver’s license number, vehicle registration number, and handicap placard information.

Earlier this month, the Louisiana OMV started offering free credit monitoring to everyone whose data may have been stolen in the massive data breach. There were email notices sent out to those who were involved and whose email addresses they have, although they didn’t specify who or the number of people affected.

The state of Louisiana also provided one year of LifeLock identity theft protection and credit monitoring to Louisiana residents involved. In addition, they set up a toll-free call center (866.861.8717) to answer any questions the public may have about the data breach. It was also recommended by the state to put a fraud alert on your credit or freeze your credit at all three major credit bureaus. Freezing and thawing your credit is free and will prevent a fraudster from opening a new line of credit in your name.

If you believe your information was involved and have any questions about this incident, including how to sign up for free credit monitoring and identity theft protection, please review information about the incident at https://nextsteps.la.gov/substitute-notice.

To help prevent something like this from happening again, additional safeguards and technical security measures have been implemented to further protect and monitor the MOVEIt environment.
