CyberTalk

Today has been the longest Wednesday ever and it feels like I'm back in New York City due to the temperature decrease. Between class, work study, mentoring, staying engaged with my social life, and eating, I don't remember why I anticipated this semester to begin so quickly. But, I'm glad it did and I wouldn't want to be any less occupied with the amount of commitments I have.

In today's conversation, I decided to express my deep concern for the purpose of my blog and the topics I choose to discuss. A lot of people have questioned my choice of concentration and I felt the need to address where my passion comes from and how to stay interested on this path.

Growing up, I've always considered myself as the "IT" person in my family and household. Since I was 6 years old, I've been able to operate on computers, whether it was hardware or software. Whenever there were issues with Wi-Fi, it was up to me to troubleshoot the network, do research, and remember the process when the issue occurred again. I never complained because most of my time was either spent on the computer downloading software or playing video games. I still receive phone calls from my family when they are having issues with their network or need me to set up a new device.

When I was a high school senior, I decided to become more serious about my life and career choice. I reached out to the IT person at my school and asked him about his experience and the path he had chosen. Our conversation along with the work I'd see him do in the classrooms motivated me to research about a career in computer science, specifically cyber security. I found an interest in network security and user privacy. I proceeded to break down the idea into 3 categories: Wireless communications, location services, and identity theft. And that's where the idea of a blog started from. My initial website was just a place for my peers to read information about the meaning of privacy and the importance of it. I decided to reinvent my website into an actual blog to gain feedback and dive into the research and the lives of malicious people in this world.

As I sit back and have flashbacks about my younger self, I now realize I was a very patient person and had an interest in user experience and satisfaction. I knew I had a passion for working with technology but what I knew then is not even close to what I know now. When I grew older and reached my teenage years, I started to pay attention to the amount of information people allow others to access. This was both verbally and virtually. I have always been a private person and didn't socialize much. Most people didn't even know my mother had another child. Some people may consider me as humble, but I'd like to consider myself appreciative.

Why appreciative? I appreciate the idea and meaning of privacy. I appreciate how private my thoughts are and how people can only make assumptions based off small bits of information they collect from my behavior. I appreciate how I'm not obligated to share personal information with strangers nor be apart of this new era of social media. I appreciate how I don't have to post my every move, location, or daily activities. I appreciate a secure life. And I appreciate ToBeSecured where I can express my thoughts and help you all to live a more secure life with privacy tips.

If you would like to discuss further, please leave a comment or ask a question. I'd love to chat with my readers and hear your thoughts. Thank you for dropping in and remember ToBeSecured!
