US is #1 for Data Theft

Good evening and welcome back to another post from ToBeSecured. In addition to this blog post, I dropped episode 44 of Cyber Tuesdays series today, where I shared information about an iOS flaw that could've let hackers take over nearby devices within seconds or minutes. If you have an Instagram account, make sure to follow ToBeSecured and turn on your post notifications when new content is released.

In other news, the US has been ranked as #1 country affected by data theft. In the past seven years, there has been more than 6 billion data breach cases. With 4x as many cases as South Korea (2nd place), the US is the worst-affected country in the world from data breaches. The country has also been named the data theft capital of the world.

Uswitch released a report that says "Host to a high population and an industrial hub of technology-based companies, the states is a hotspot for cybercrime. Despite a number of proposals to improve it during the Obama administration, cybersecurity in the states is not as strong as it could be, leaving them open to more data breaches."

Hackers are stealing the most popular types of stolen data: email addresses, passwords, usernames, IP addresses, names, dates of birth, phone numbers, physical addresses, genders, and website activity.

To keep our data secured online, we must use VPNs (Virtual Private Networks), invest in antivirus software, be smart about the passwords we create and use, update our software regularly, use 2-factor authentication, and be mindful of how secured devices are.
